For Your Information: Comment DVDs (and CDs)

Hello!

This post will be a little different, as it's not a translation of anything but will act more as a heads-up of sorts. It's relevant however, because I have been translating material directly related to this subject.

In Japan, for smaller, lesser-known bands and solo artists (especially within the visual kei scene), it's very common for CD shops to have special exclusive bonuses that you receive when you buy a new (ie. recently released) CD or DVD. It usually depends on the band and what they themselves want to do, but oftentimes it's something called a Comment DVD (sometimes they'll make a Comment CD). It's pretty self-explanatory, but I wanted to clear the air before there is a chance for any confusion.

A Comment DVD usually includes one, or more, or all members of the band (or just the solo artist), and they'll make a brief introduction of themselves, thank the fans for purchasing their CD/DVD, and make a small comment about the release.

A Comment CD is essentially the same as a Comment DVD, except of course you have only the audio, and no video.

Comment DVDs and CDs do not cost extra, but they can be rare exclusives as there are a set number of copies made and once the bonuses are gone - even if the release they were paired with is still available - you can no longer receive that Comment DVD or CD.

Now, because I am a staunch supporter of a couple bands, I usually try my best to get all the Comment DVDs and CDs. (It is, evidently, much easier to do this when you're living in Japan, as some of these shops do not ship internationally). Each one is a little different, not just because of the shop you get it from, but the contents of each can differ. For me, when translating lyrics, these DVDs and CDs can be extremely helpful in making sure of having the correct context and not missing other pertinent information that is not readily available in the lyrics booklets themselves.

Thank you for reading, and I hope you look forward to the upcoming posts!

This has been an FYI. (There will likely be more in the future!)
